Take your time with this lesson. Weather Spanish is simple — but powerful.
🌎 Why Learning Weather Spanish Is Essential
In Spanish-speaking countries, people often start conversations with:
Hace calor hoy, ¿no?
Está lloviendo mucho.
Qué buen tiempo hace.
If you can understand and respond to these phrases, you immediately sound more natural and approachable.
📌 Weather Spanish is about patterns, not memorization.
🔑 The Three Main Structures for Weather in Spanish
Spanish does not use “it is” the same way English does.
Instead, it uses three main verbs, depending on the situation.
1️⃣ Hacer – General Weather Conditions
This is the most common structure.
Hace calor → It’s hot
Hace frío → It’s cold
Hace buen tiempo → The weather is nice
Hace mal tiempo → The weather is bad
🗣️ Practice:
Hoy hace calor.
En invierno hace frío.
📌 There is no subject. You don’t say eso hace calor.
2️⃣ Estar – Temporary Conditions
Use estar with adjectives to describe how the sky or environment is right now.
Está soleado → It’s sunny
Está nublado → It’s cloudy
Está húmedo → It’s humid
🗣️ Practice:
Hoy está nublado.
Por la tarde está soleado.
📌 These are temporary states, so estar is perfect.
3️⃣ Weather Verbs – Actions of Nature
Some weather conditions are expressed with verbs.
Llueve → It rains
Está lloviendo → It is raining (now)
Nieva → It snows
Examples:
Hoy llueve mucho.
En las montañas nieva en invierno.
☀️ Common Weather Vocabulary (Core List)
Read slowly and repeat out loud:
el clima → weather
el tiempo → weather / time
el sol → sun
la lluvia → rain
el viento → wind
🗣️ Sentence practice:
El clima es bueno hoy.
Hay mucho viento.
🌡️ Talking About Temperature Like a Native
Spanish talks about temperature using hacer.
Hace veinte grados.
Hace treinta grados.
Hace mucho calor.
🗣️ Practice:
Hoy hace veinticinco grados.
Por la noche hace frío.
📌 Degrees are always plural: grados.
🧠 Combining Weather Information (Natural Flow)
Now let’s sound more fluent.
Read:
Hoy hace calor y está soleado.
Por la mañana hace frío, pero por la tarde hace calor.
📌 Use:
y → and
pero → but
🗣️ Mini Dialogues (Very Real Spanish)
