How to Talk About Recent Past Experiences in Spanish

Up until now, everything you’ve learned has allowed you to survive in Spanish:

  • greetings

  • daily life

  • plans

  • invitations

But now we enter a new stage.

You’re going to learn how to say things like:

  • I have visited Mexico.

  • I have tried tacos.

  • I have studied Spanish.

This is where Spanish starts to feel real, because you can now talk about your experiences.

And the good news?

For English speakers, this tense is very familiar.

Part 1: What Is Pretérito Perfecto?

🔹 What you learn here:

You understand the structure before memorizing anything.

Pretérito Perfecto is used to talk about:

Things you have done in your life or recently.

In English:

I have eaten
I have visited

In Spanish, it works almost the same way.

Part 2: The Structure (Very Similar to English)

The formula that makes this tense easy.

Structure:

haber (present) + past participle

Part 3: Forming the Past Participle

How to build verbs easily.

Rule:

  • -ar → -ado

  • -er / -ir → -ido

Part 4: First Useful Sentences

Now you can say:

  • He visitado México.
    I have visited Mexico.

This is already powerful, real communication.

Part 5: When Do Spanish Speakers Use This Tense?

Used with words like:

  • hoy – today

  • esta semana – this week

  • este mes – this month

  • ya – already

Examples:

  • Hoy he estudiado español.

  • Ya he comido.
