Talking About Places in Your City in Spanish
(Aquí, Allí, Cerca, Lejos & Location Basics)
Why This Lesson Is Essential
When learning Spanish, there is a moment when vocabulary stops being enough.
You don’t just want to know words —
you want to use Spanish to describe your real life.
One of the first real-life skills you need is:
talking about where you live
describing places in your city
explaining distance and location
This lesson helps you connect Spanish to your environment.
If you master this lesson, you can:
survive in a Spanish-speaking city
ask for help
understand simple directions
sound natural, not robotic
Part 1: Understanding Places as Communication (Not Vocabulary)
Before learning words, understand this:
In Spanish, places are always connected to YOU.
Spanish speakers constantly talk about:
where things are
how close or far they are
how to get there
This lesson is not about memorizing lists.
It is about thinking in location.
Part 2: Essential Places in the City
Let’s build your base.
Read every word slowly and out loud.
Pronunciation matters more than speed.
Core City Vocabulary
la ciudad – city
el centro – downtown / city center
el barrio – neighborhood
la calle – street
la avenida – avenue
el parque – park
la plaza – square
el restaurante – restaurant
el café – café
el supermercado – supermarket
la tienda – store
el banco – bank
la oficina – office
la escuela – school
el metro – subway
👉 Stop here and ask yourself:
Which of these places exist near my house?
That mental connection is key.
Part 3: Location Words – Aquí, Ahí, Allí (Deep Explanation)
These three words describe distance from the speaker.
They are not random.
| Spanish | Meaning | Distance from YOU |
|---|---|---|
| Aquí | here | very close |
| Ahí | there | a short distance |
| Allí | over there | far |
Think like this:
Aquí = I can touch it
Ahí = I can see it
Allí = I need to go there
Examples in context:
Estoy aquí, en el parque.
El café está ahí, en la esquina.
El aeropuerto está allí, fuera de la ciudad.
📌 Important:
Spanish uses these words constantly in conversation.
Part 4: Distance Language – Cerca & Lejos (Very Important)
Two extremely common words:
cerca – near
lejos – far
Critical Rule (Do NOT skip this):
👉 Cerca and lejos ALWAYS use “de”
Correct Examples:
Vivo cerca del centro.
El banco está lejos del parque.
La escuela está cerca de mi casa.
Why this matters:
Without de, your Spanish sounds incorrect.
Asking Where Things Are (Real Interaction)
This is survival Spanish.
Two Core Questions:
¿Dónde está…?
¿Dónde queda…? (very common in Latin America)
Examples:
¿Dónde está el baño?
¿Dónde queda el supermercado?
¿Dónde queda el metro?
Natural Answers:
Está aquí.
Está cerca.
Está lejos.
Está en el centro.
Está cerca del parque.
Notice:
Spanish prefers short, efficient answers.
Part 6: Talking About Where You Live (Personal Spanish)
Now Spanish becomes your Spanish.
Base Structure:
Vivo en + place
Expanded Examples:
Vivo en la ciudad.
Vivo en el centro de la ciudad.
Vivo en un barrio tranquilo.
Vivo cerca del trabajo.
Vivo lejos de la escuela.
📌 Practice tip:
Say these sentences replacing the information with your real life.
Part 7: Real Conversation (Natural Flow)
A: ¿Dónde vives?
B: Vivo en el centro.
A: ¿Está cerca de tu trabajo?
B: Sí, está muy cerca.
A: ¿Y el supermercado?
B: Está ahí, en la esquina.
This is authentic everyday Spanish.
