Giving Advice in Spanish (Should, Need To, Have To)

How to tell someone what they should do… politely and naturally

🧠 What you will learn in this lesson

In this lesson, you will learn how to:

  • Give advice in Spanish without sounding bossy

  • Say should, need to, and have to correctly

  • Use structures natives use every day when helping others

  • Combine opinions + advice in longer, natural sentences

This is a key conversational skill. Native speakers give advice constantly in daily life.

🔷 Part 1 — The Most Common Way to Say “You Should”

Spanish does not use a direct word for “should” like English.

Natives use:

Deberías + infinitive

SpanishEnglish
Deberías estudiar másYou should study more
Deberías dormir tempranoYou should sleep early
Deberías ir al médicoYou should go to the doctor

This is friendly, not aggressive.

🔷 Part 2 — A Softer, More Polite Way (Very Native)

Yo que tú… (If I were you…)

  • Yo que tú, hablaría con el profesor.

  • Yo que tú, descansaría un poco.

This sounds caring and very natural.

🔷 Part 3 — Saying “You Need To”

Necesitas + infinitive

  • Necesitas tomar agua.

  • Necesitas practicar español todos los días.

Stronger than deberías, but still polite.

🔷 Part 4 — Saying “You Have To” (Obligation)

Tienes que + infinitive

  • Tienes que estudiar para el examen.

  • Tienes que ir al trabajo.

This expresses obligation, not advice.

🔷 Part 5 — Combining Opinion + Advice (Fluent Spanish)

This is where you start sounding advanced.

  • Creo que deberías descansar.

  • Me parece que necesitas hablar con él.

  • Para mí, deberías intentarlo.

📖 Reading Practice

Mi amigo está muy cansado porque trabaja mucho. Yo creo que debería descansar más. También pienso que necesita dormir mejor. Yo que tú, hablaría con el jefe para trabajar menos horas. Es importante cuidar la salud.

Notice the mix of opinion + advice.
