Talking About Childhood and Habits in Spanish (El Imperfecto)
How to Describe What You Used to Do, How Things Were, and Childhood Memories

Until now, your student has learned how to talk about:
present routines
future plans
past completed actions (pretérito)
Now we enter one of the most important and confusing parts for English speakers:
Talking about the past… when there is no exact ending.
In English you say:
I used to play outside.
We lived in a small house.
My grandmother was very kind.
I watched TV every day.
Spanish does not use pretérito for this.
Spanish uses a different tense:
El imperfecto
This tense is used for:
habits in the past
descriptions in the past
how things were
repeated actions
childhood memories
Mastering this is what makes a learner sound much more natural and advanced.

Imperfect is also used to describe how things were:

El clima era frío.
Mi escuela era pequeña.
This is not an action. It’s a background description.
