Talking About Likes and Dislikes in Spanish

How to Express What You Like, Love, and Don’t Like

Welcome to Lesson Ten of Your Spanish Journey

Now that you can talk about your daily activities, it’s time to add something very important to your Spanish: your opinions.

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to say:

  • What you like

  • What you don’t like

  • What you love

Using real, simple Spanish that native speakers use every day.

🔑 The Most Important Verb: GUSTAR

In Spanish, gustar works differently than in English.

Instead of saying “I like coffee”, Spanish says:

Coffee is pleasing to me.

Don’t worry — you don’t need grammar terms. You just need patterns.

🧩 The Basic Structure (Memorize This)

Me gusta + noun / verb

Examples:

  • Me gusta el café.

  • Me gusta la música.

  • Me gusta estudiar español.

🗣️ Repeat out loud:

Me gusta…

➕ Talking About Likes (Plural)

When you like more than one thing:

Me gustan + plural noun

Examples:

  • Me gustan los tacos.

  • Me gustan las películas.

🗣️ Say it slowly:

Me gustan…

🚫 Talking About Dislikes

To say you don’t like something:

No me gusta…
No me gustan…

Examples:

  • No me gusta el frío.

  • No me gustan los lunes.

📌 Simple and clear.

❤️ Strong Likes

To express stronger feelings:

  • Me encanta → I love

  • Me fascina → I’m fascinated by

  • Odio → I hate (use carefully)

Examples:

  • Me encanta el chocolate.

  • Me fascina viajar.

  • Odio levantarme temprano.

🗣️ Real-Life Examples (Read & Repeat)

Me gusta el café, pero no me gusta el té.
Me encanta la música latina.
No me gustan las películas largas.

Read them again. Out loud.
